A new study published in the journal Nature this week titled “Increasing CO2 threatens human nutrition” indicates that increasing levels of CO2 (such as those predicted to be reached by about mid-century) will result in decreased levels of nutrients Zinc and Iron in crops.
Delhi Daily News, reporting on the new research, commented “An estimated 2 billion people tend to suffer from iron and zinc deficiencies, resulting in 63 million deaths yearly from malnourishment. The reduction in the concentration of these nutrients actually poses a severe threat to mankind related with global warming. ”
